SUMMARY Performs semiskilled work in transporting students safely, efficiently, and economically to and from school on a daily basis and to extracurricular events on a non-regular basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Conducts pre-trip inspection of school bus/vehicle prior to every trip for defects.
Uses established routes and designated bus stops.
Reports bus accidents and student injuries to authorities.
Conducts emergency evacuation drills in keeping with division regulations.
Instructs riders regarding being responsible passengers.
Drives defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.
Drives with safety of students as first priority.
Reports personnel absences in time for supervisor to secure a substitute driver.
Performs bus housekeeping duties inside and out.
Fills gas tank and adds oil if necessary.
Reports bus defects to supervisor.
Establishes favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, teachers, students, and principals.
Exhibits positive image as a loyal representative of the school division.
Demonstrates knowledge of rules and regulations promulgated by local, State and federal authorities.
Demonstrates knowledge of State laws and local ordinances.
Deals with exuberant behavioral characteristics of youthful riders.
Administers disciplinary procedures in keeping with school board policies and administrative regulations.
Is alert and exercises good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles and irregular special requests by parents or riders.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Meet school bus driver certification requirements.
Meet State requirements for appropriate licensing.
Meet State physical examination requirements.
Meet local or State standards for driving test.
Meet local or State standards for driver record check.
Must have successfully completed the National Red Cross First Aid Course.
OTHER Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students. Ability to operate radio communication when necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
